"The New Jersey lawyer accused of a series of sexual assaults in Boston more than a decade ago was indicted Tuesday on new charges of rape and assault, authorities said.
Matthew Nilo, 35, was indicted on seven additional counts — of rape, aggravated rape, assault with intent to rape and indecent assault and battery — related to a series of attacks that authorities say occurred from January 2007 to July 2008, Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden’s office said in a news release."

"For Senior Deputy District Attorney Brent Nibecker, analyzing every one of Ventura County’s backlogged sexual assault kits is the right thing to do. With that in mind, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office’s forensic services bureau recently submitted the first 100 of an estimated 3,000 backlogged kits to a lab for analysis.
The Ventura County sexual assault kit initiative, funded by a $2.5-million grant from the U.S. Department of Justice, is a multi-agency effort to submit all untested kits for DNA testing, investigate unsolved cases and prosecute offenders. June 1 marked the launch of the project’s website, vcsaki.com, where the community can track the county’s progress."
Durham police charge man with rape and kidnapping reported nearly 33 years ago

Nearly 33 years after a woman told police that a man kidnapped and sexually assaulted her, Durham police have charged a man with rape. Samuel Harris, 56, was arrested last week on two counts of first-degree rape and three counts of first-degree sex offense, the Durham Police Department reported in a news release Thursday. Police said his DNA matched evidence collected in a rape kit from August 1, 1990.
Wisconsin man sentenced for serial sex assaults; uncovered by backlogged sexual assault kits

"A Wisconsin man was sentenced on Friday to 18 years in connection to serial sex assaults that were uncovered by backlogged sexual assault kits.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Justice (DOJ), Matthew Crockett, 46 of Racine, pled guilty to three counts of second-degree sexual assault and two counts of false imprisonment. He was sentenced to 18 years of initial confinement followed by 18 years of extended supervision."

"An Akron bartender accused of sexually assaulting several of his customers recently accepted a plea deal rather than take his case to trial.
Kevin Suhoza, 49, pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual battery, a third-degree felony, in Summit County Common Pleas Court.
Suhoza is among several people charged based on the work of the Akron Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (ASAKI), which is reinvestigating cold rape cases that have DNA evidence from the past 20 years."

" Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey announced that his office awarded SAFE Kit Initiative Service Awards to area law enforcement agencies and community partners for their dedication toward the eradication of untested sexual assault kits throughout the state.
“The Attorney General’s Office has made great progress in the fight to clear the backlog of untested sexual assault kits throughout the state, but we haven’t done it alone,” said Attorney General Bailey."

"A team that investigates sexual assault cold cases -- called the Kalamazoo Sexual Assault Kit Initiative -- has been dubbed the “gold standard” in Michigan, Attorney General Dana Nessel said.
The Kalamazoo SAKI project started in 2017, and is funded through grants. It started investigating untested sexual assault kits and prosecuting cases. Kalamazoo County had about 180 untested kits when the project started, but they’ve all been tested now, Nessel said during a news conference in Kalamazoo on Friday, June 2."
