Community- and systems-based advocates are needed for sexual assault victims and the criminal justice process. Each type of advocate provides specialized support to victims to ensure victim needs are met within the criminal justice system; all advocates are critical to the success of cases. Understanding the roles of each type of advocate and seeing the benefit of both types working together is valuable for not only advocates themselves, but also victims, law enforcement, and prosecutors.
Multidisciplinary Response, Victim Care
Advocacy Roles and Resources, Bridging Disciplinary Divides
Funded by the Bureau of Justice Assistance, the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative aims to create a coordinated community response that ensures just resolution to sexual assault cases. Through this program, funding is provided to support multidisciplinary community response teams engaged in the comprehensive reform of jurisdictions approaches to sexual assault cases resulting from evidence found in previously unsubmitted sexual assault kits.
